Today, the world celebrates international women’s day:
• This International Women’s Day, 8 March 2023, the UN Women and the United Nations in celebrating under the theme DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.
• 22% of women make up only 22 percent of artificial intelligence workers globally.
• A survey of women journalists from 125 countries found that 73% had suffered online violence in the course of their work.
• From the earliest days of computing to the present age of virtual reality and artificial intelligence, women have made untold contributions to the digital world in which we increasingly live. Their accomplishments have been against all odds, in a field that has historically neither welcomed nor appreciated them.
• Today, a persistent gender gap in digital access keeps women from unlocking technology’s full potential. Their underrepresentation in STEM education and careers remains a major barrier to their participation in tech design and governance.
• And the pervasive threat of online gender-based violence—coupled with a lack of legal recourse—too often forces them out of the digital spaces they do occupy.
In Commemoration of International Woman’s Day today, Officers of the Special Victim’s Department of the TTPS, presented two large hampers to the Girls at the St. Jude’s Home for Girls in Belmont, Port of Spain earlier today.
• Cpl Deonarine and two other officers, on behalf of the Unit, headed by Snr. Supt. Claire Guy-Alleyne, presented the hampers to the home’s Deputy Manager. The officers also later met with some of the girls and distributed brochures and had healthy conversations with them.
The mayor of Chaguanas, Faaiq Mohammed Delivered breakfast for the hardworking women out on the roads of the Chaguanas Borough Corporation in celebration of International Women’s Day.
The three men shot in Santa Cruz while on their way to a funeral of another murdered resident have been identified by police.
• The victims are 23-year-old Keron Lewis aka ‘BOBBY’, a farmer of Kingston Avenue La Canoa Road Santa Cruz; Keiron Alexander aka ‘PLUM’, a loader of LP # 13 Percy Street La Canoa Road Santa Cruz; and 35-year-old Keston Edmund, a taxi driver of Kingston Avenue La Canoa Road Santa Cruz.
• The trio were on their way to the funeral service of fellow resident Akeil Collins Johnson, who was gunned down in Morvant on Saturday 25th February 2023, when their vehicle was struck by another car.
• Police said this is the third time gunmen attempted to kill Bobby.
Drama in Laventille this morning after a man, believed to be a PH taxi driver, kidnapped a woman who jumped out of his moving vehicle after he refused to let her out.
• The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Nazim Ali of Oasis Gardens, Edinburgh, Chaguanas was eventually arrested by security officers from S.W.A.T Security Services after they intercepted his vehicle. He was detained with the assistance of residence at Eric Street in Laventille.
• The 29-year-old female victim of Lower Morvant Extension, Morvant, stopped a gold-colored NZE Toyota Corolla Motor car Reg. # PBS 354, along the Old St Joseph Road in Laventille and asked the driver to be taken to Port of Spain.
