MaximsNewsNetwork: 22 October 2010 — UN MINUSTAH: Port-au-Prince, Haiti — United Nations (UN) Special Adviser on Sport for Development Wilfred Lemke wrapped up a two day visit in Haiti intended to assess how sport projects can help develop this country and its children; during his visit, Lemke saw several sports projects and met with government bodies, NGOs and International organization related to sports.

Lemke visited a Youth program ran by the Haitian Olympic Committee and UNICEF in the Corail Cesselesse camp where thousands of Internally Displaced People (IDP) are living after the 12 January 2010 earthquake.

He said that he would speak to the International Football Association Federation’s President (FIFA) Joseph S. Blatter and ask him to organize a ‘Football for Hope’ center in Haiti, and hoped he would agree to it.

On Wednesday (20 October), Lemke met with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to see how the UN and its office could help create a network between Haitian initiatives and major sport bodies to promote projects related to sport.

Almost no sport infrastructure exists in this country.

Lemke was impressed by the traditional Brazilian Capoeira dance and other innovative activities he saw at ‘Viva Rio’ center, a Brazilian NGO with a long record of assistance to the most vulnerable populations of Belair, a poor suburb of Port au Prince.

Before leaving, he promised to come back to Haiti with concrete projects within a year or two.

On Monday (18 October) the General Assembly renewed its support for sports as a vehicle for positive social change, underlining the potential of athletics to promote such issues as development, education, health, gender equality and conflict prevention.

The resolution adopted by the 192-member Assembly also encouraged the use of sports to foster the inclusion and well-being of people with disabilities, as well as to facilitate conflict prevention and peacebuilding.
