Report: Young missed Hawks game Friday due to exchange with coach McMillan

Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young chose to miss the team’s game on Friday against the Denver Nuggets after an exchange with head coach Nate McMillan during shootaround, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

The two reportedly had a disagreement over Young — who was receiving treatment on his shoulder — and his participation in shootaround. The 24-year-old wanted to skip shootaround and decide on his status for the game later in the day, but McMillan gave him the choice to come off the bench or not play at all instead.

The two-time all-star was ruled out with shoulder soreness after he decided to miss the game.

Young and the Hawks currently sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a 13-10 record. The former fifth-overall pick has averaged 27.8 points and 9.6 assists per game this season, despite shooting career-low percentages from the field (41.1) and from three (30.3).

Young completed practice on Sunday and will return for Atlanta’s game on Monday against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
