The Netherlands became the first nation to advance to the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals following a 3-1 win over the United States.
Louis Van Gaal’s squad will take on the winner of the Argentina-Australia round of 16 match.
The Dutch took the lead in the 10th minute when Denzel Dumfries found Memphis Depay near the penalty spot with a low cross. The Barcelona man bagged his 44th goal to become the Dutch national team’s second all-time leading scorer, trailing only Robin Van Persie.
Dumfries gave the USA another taste of his medicine in first half stoppage time. The winger sent another low cross, this time to Daley Blind at the penalty spot, to give the Oranje a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
The Americans scored their first goal of the game in the 76th minute when Haji Wright tipped a cross-pass from Christian Pulisic inside the box. The ball ballooned over everyone and into the back of the net.
Dumfries capped off his productive night with a goal of his own to give the Dutch a 2-1 lead. Blind returned the favour with a cross inside the box and Dumfries volleyed in his first goal of the World Cup.
With the USA’s loss, Concacaf becomes the first confederation at the 2022 World Cup to be fully eliminated from the tournament. The Americans were the only Concacaf nation to make it through to the knockout round after Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica had been eliminated in the group stage.
