FIFA President Gianni Infantino issued a Qatar 2022 closing message on Monday, describing it as the “best ever World Cup” and congratulating Argentina for winning their third world title.
He also paid tribute to runners-up France, third-placed Croatia and many neutral fans’ team of the tournament, Morocco.
“Football is becoming truly global,” he said. “For the first time in history, teams from every continent reached the knockout stage.”
He thanked the “fantastic, incredible” host nation for “welcoming the world” to the region and putting on a show that allowed fans from 32 countries to celebrate football “peacefully and joyfully together” in Qatar.
Off the pitch, the World Cup “used the power of football and the projection of the World Cup to tackle discrimination, to promote sustainability and to encourage people to be more active,” he said.
Infantino also looked forward to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in July and August next year and said that preparations are already underway for the next Men’s competition in Canada, Mexico and the United States in 2026.
He concluded his address with some final words of gratitude.
“Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making this the best FIFA World Cup ever,” he said, “and for showing that football unites the world.”
